Charles Phillips Brings His Oracle Experience as Infor CEO

Thursday, August 25th, 2011

Infor Global Solutions based in Alpharetta, GA may have found a gold mine in Charles Phillips who joined the company last September 2010 as its President and COO after spending 7 years as Oracle’s Co-President.  But it was not as if the Infor board didn’t know that his stint at Oracle could be leveraged to propel the privately held Infor to greater heights of success.

Charles takes over from maverick Jim Schaper whose competent leadership has grown Infor into the $2 billion software development since it started in 2002. The company now markets an ERP solution considered the world’s 3rd largest after SAP and Oracle. With more than 70,000 customers across 125 countries, the company has targeted a wider market base of SMEs that comprise about 90% of the corporate landscape.  For that, Jim is now the company board chairman and operating partner for Golden Gate Capital, Infor’s equity backer.

Jim Schaper has earlier intimated that he has high hopes when he handed over the leadership baton to Charles Phillips that the company can exceed his 59% annual growth.  For starters, his reputation in the IT industry has boosted Infor’s chances for a successfully IPO it plans to embark soon.  But more than that, his experience will make a strong difference as the Infor goes into full speed into its 2nd growth phase. As early as January, the company released it next generation ION application using Microsoft technologies in its business intelligence, collaborative cloud computing and RICH internet apps.  Infor also layered its apps with a common user interface, the same way that Oracle under Charles implemented a common user interface that has increased the market popularity of the Oracle ERP and boosted its revenues threefold.

Charles Phillips had been in charge of Oracle’s expansion plans, bringing together about 60 IT companies worth $30 billion, including such former big names as Hyperion Solutions, BEA Systems and Siebel Systems.  Over the years, Infor has likewise embarked on an expansion binge acquiring several but smaller IT companies to get to where it is today. But it also has plans to further the strategy with the planned acquisition of Lawson Software. Charles is now busy overseeing the transaction with a $1.8 billion purchase offer he hopes to complete within the 3rd quarter of the year.  Infor is certainly in good hands when it comes to a shopping binge for IT companies.
